What is e-export?

E-export is selling goods and services over the internet to buyers abroad. Unlike traditional export, the sale happens through digital channels. You can reach customers worldwide via global marketplaces such as Amazon, Etsy, eBay and Alibaba, or through your own e-commerce site.

In Turkey, e-export has grown rapidly, especially in the last five years. In 2024 Turkey's e-export reached USD 6.4 billion, accounting for about 2.6% of total exports. The share keeps rising, and state e-export supports further accelerate this growth.

In short: e-export is selling abroad over the internet without a physical shop or intermediary. In Turkey the Ministry of Trade actively supports this field.

How does e-export work?

Starting e-export requires completing certain steps in order. The outline below is a general roadmap for companies that want to do e-export from Turkey.

1. Company setup and legal base

To benefit from e-export supports you must establish a limited or joint-stock company. Sole proprietorships cannot use these supports. After incorporation, complete tax plate, trade registry gazette and Exporters' Association membership.

2. Target market and marketplace choice

Decide which countries and channels you will sell through. You can sell via Amazon (US, Europe), Etsy (handmade), eBay, Alibaba or your own marketplace. For exports to Ministry-designated target countries, support rates can go up to 70%.

3. Product listing and logistics planning

Products should be listed for the target market with multi-language support, international shipping agreements and customs processes planned. Prepare documents such as bill of lading, proforma invoice and customs declaration.

4. Payment and collection infrastructure

Set up suitable payment infrastructure to collect from foreign buyers. Turkish payment providers (e.g. iyzico, PayTR) can usually collect in USD and EUR. FX management and fee optimization are critical at this stage.

5. Applying for state supports

To use Ministry of Trade e-export supports for your activities, apply through Exporters' Associations. For details visit the Ministry of Trade E-Export Supports page (Turkish).

What are the state e-export supports?

Under Decision 5986 on E-Export Supports, the Ministry of Trade offers a broad package to strengthen firms in international digital markets. These supports reimburse between 50% and 70% of eligible e-export spending.

Softomi marketplace e-export software features

Softomi marketplace e-export software gives sellers in Turkey a full stack to sell worldwide: multi-language, automatic translation, international shipping integrations and FX handling. For details see our Marketplace E-Export Features page.

Multi-language and language options

E-export projects on Softomi can use three language approaches:

  • Translated storefront + products in target language: ideal for smaller catalogues; sellers can translate Excel via Google Docs and upload.
  • Translated storefront + partial Google Translate: products stay in Turkish; names and categories auto-translate on load. Recommended for large catalogues.
  • Full Google Translate integration: backend stays Turkish; visitors get target language via flag or IP. All languages Google supports can be used.

In practice, a professionally translated storefront plus auto-translated product data is often optimal for large e-export sites. Even AliExpress (USD 72B GMV in 2020) has thousands of translation issues yet huge volume — buyers often overlook wording when deciding.

International shipping and invoicing

Two main delivery models are common:

  • Per-order shipping: each seller hands orders to the contracted carrier. UPS and PTS integrations can auto-generate bills of lading and proforma invoices.
  • Bulk export: sellers send orders to the marketplace owner's warehouse; the owner exports in bulk and issues invoices.

Collections and FX

Turkish payment providers (e.g. iyzico, PayTR) often charge an extra ~2.5% for foreign-currency collection. Softomi can show prices in the buyer's currency but settle in TRY at Central Bank rate at checkout, avoiding that extra fee.

Customs duty calculation

Optionally, estimated customs duty for the destination country can be calculated and collected on-site, improving CX and reducing customs surprises.
